Andrea recently took a class with the wonderful Sarah McCartney, the owner and master perfume blender behind 4160Tuesdays. She loved the class so much, she asked her to join the Indie Marketplace, and she accepted!
From their website: 4160Tuesdays is an artisan perfumery based in London where we've been hand-making adventurous scents since 2011. We create all our perfumes in small batches of 50-200 bottles at our Hammersmith studio, where we also run fragrance-making workshops.
Our perfumes are inspired by a place or a person at a certain moment, and created by our perfumer, Sarah McCartney (who isn't related to any of the other more famous McCartneys but she does get asked quite often).
We'd like to make our world a lovelier place starting with the small space around us and working outwards. 4160 Tuesdays stands out from other niche fragrance brands not just because it’s British, creative, witty and pioneering, but for an indie house handmaking all our fragrances, we're unusually affordable. We want everyone who’s interested in fragrance to be able to try them.

- Rosa Ribes
Rosa Ribes (rhymes with Ebays) is a rose blackcurrant chypre fragrance, the result of Sarah's continuing obsessions with Ribena and all things curranty. There are blackcurrant bushes in her tiny garden, and raspberry canes too. It's the balance of rose and fruit with its chypre heart that makes it her absolute favourite. The chypre is made with a drop of oakmoss absolute, bergamot, opoponax and patchouli, although the perfumery masterplan is that they're blended so that you can't distinguish them; they just become one smooth fragrant cloud.
- Fluffy Lemon Top
It’s not that fluffy and we didn’t make it with lemon; it’s citrus fruit arrival comes from orange, tangerine and bergamot essential oils. It reminded us of the happiness we get from eating a lemon top ice cream at the seaside on a summer day, so the name just happened.
In reality, after its happy juicy introduction, it’s a floral chypre with an iris-narcissus-lily of the valley heart, with a generous topping of white chocolate sauce, tonka absolute and musks. If we started again, perhaps we’d give it a sophisticated name, more suited to the art deco ice cream parlour of a Normandy hotel, graced with elegantly dressed artists, delicately tasting the chef ’s latest culinary extravagances. Fluffy Lemon Top will tempt you in with its friendly top notes, and draw you closer by slowly unveiling its hidden charms.
- The Orange Tree
We were commissioned to make the aroma of an orange tree to fragrance a very exclusive gathering, so we did. Then here everyone at our studio asked for a bottle of it to wear, news leaked out and our customers wanted to try it, so we guided it through the correct procedures that all perfumes must follow, and decided to launch it. It reminds our customers of Seville, Sicily, Marrakesh and California, wherever they have sat in the shade of orange leaves. Wear it, and you’ll imagine you’re there.
- Truth Beauty Freedom Love
James Skinner, scarf designer, and Sarah McCartney, our perfumer, collaborated to make a scarf and a fragrance. They met in our studio in West London, to smell different natural and synthetic materials. The result was a collection of aromas which Sarah took as inspiration for the fragrance. She named it Truth Beauty Freedom Love, the rallying cry of the 19th Century Bohemian movement or artists, writers and free thinkers. James illustrated the plants that the materials came from, and the wildlife they support. In the corners of the scarf he's placed the aroma molecules which cast a perfumer's spell on the blend to transform it from just a mixture of materials into an elegant, wearable fragrance. First you'll probably smell honey and bergamot, then a blend of tobacco, vanilla, hay, iris, apricot, musk and violet tinted woods.
- Tokyo Spring Blossom
The fragrance formerly known as Urura's Tokyo Cafe is the scent of a warm spring breeze blowing through blossom. We first made this for a charity event in Tokyo at Urura's tiny Green Ginger Cafe and it turns out that her name means exactly that – the breeze through spring blossoms. Coincidence? Possibly. Magic probably.
This is the fragrance that started Sarah's career as a perfumer when Josephine Fairley of the Perfume Society wrote about it on her blog. You’ll smell citrus top notes – pink grapefruit and tangerine - deep warm opoponax, tolu balsam, and raspberry jam at the base, rose, violet and woods at its heart, but all blended so smoothly that it's hard to separate them.
