Snapping icicles off of the gutter while standing on the front porch in your bathrobe is one of the most satisfying things there is to do outdoors in the winter. You forget all year, because there is so much else to think about during the rest of the year. Then that mid-winter snow starts to come down hard, and you get a bunch of snow piled on the roof and it thaws just a tiny bit during the day and freezes so hard at night. The icicles start to form, sometimes they take days to reach full size, but sometimes it happens in no time. It's then that you step out onto the porch in your fluffy little slippers, and SMACK. It falls into the snow drift below and disappears. You wack another one. You grab a broomstick and smacksmacksmacksmacksmacksmack across the underside of the gutter. You tell the children you are doing it "for safety." But we know. It can be our little secret.
