Daisy was nervous. She was hoping this would finally be “the night” with Colin. They hadn’t been together long, and she was overplanning every last detail: her outfit, her hair, her makeup, what she should make for dinner, the lighting, her bedding…. Every single thing was making her anxious. She changed her outfit about seven times before finally settling on something a little more comfortable and casual, like she wasn’t trying too hard. She brushed her hair, touched up her makeup, brushed her teeth, put on extra deodorant and a spritz of perfume, and tried to calm the butterflies in her stomach. She was trying to get ready quickly because he was waiting in her living room, but she was just so excited she couldn’t help herself. Finally, Daisy left her room and came out and did a little twirl to show off her outfit. “I’m so sorry to keep you waiting, but I think you’ll agree it was worth the wait.”
At that moment, the oven timer beeped. “Oh! The food!” Daisy ran into her kitchen and pulled the chicken out of the oven. (In all honesty it was a rotisserie chicken from the store she reheated and a sheet pan of pre-cut vegetables she’d tossed in some oil and seasoning but it smelled and looked impressive, and that was all that mattered to her.) Daisy grinned at Colin, who grinned right back. She made plates for herself and Colin and went to sit next to him on her couch. “Well. Bon appetit!” she said, and they dug in. The food was great, and soon they were both stuffed. Colin didn’t have the best table manners, and yes, he’d ended up needing his own, separate food, but who really cared? She was so happy.
Daisy pulled a blanket onto her lap. “So, uh, what do you wanna do?” Colin looked at her with his big green eyes, and slowly started making his way closer to her. Daisy held her breath, too scared to move. A little closer … a little bit closer … come on now, almost there…. Finally, Colin hopped into her lap and settled down. Daisy knew she couldn’t yell or he would run away, so instead she whipped out her camera and started taking pictures. Her group chat of girlfriends had been blowing up, asking what they were doing that night and wondering where Daisy was and why she wasn’t answering. She sent them at least six pictures of Colin, from every possible angle. “Look who finally got in my lap!!!” she said, taking a fresh selfie of her and her cat, Colin. “Sorry ladies, consider my plans canceled: The cat is on my lap.” As their replies poured in, varying from “How cute!” to “Holy crap you’re a full-on cat lady now,” Daisy logged into her social media to post all the pictures with the hashtag #catladyera.
