The caduceus is an ancient symbol. In Greek mythology, it’s the staff that Hermes carried. It shows two serpents entwined around a magic wand, surmounted by a set of beautiful wings. It was the basis for the astrological symbol that represented the planet Mercury in Antiquity, and thereby also represents the chemical of the same name. Caduceus is also recognized as a symbol of commerce and negotiation; in both realms, balanced exchange and reciprocity are the ideals, which is why the balanced, double-snaked caduceus is apropos.
