Juliet gazed mournfully out of the frost-laden window pane. She wasn't actually mourning anything, but that is how you gaze out of a window in a mansion like this, the gaudy framed art on the walls, the candelabras burning around the room, dark lace and silk draped here and there, and intricate patterns woven into the furniture. The view of the courtyard below was pretty, in a desolate, frozen kind of way. The trees had all shed their leaves, and the snow came and went in drifts these days, but inside, a fire cracked in the elaborate hearth on the east wall. Juliet turned to Margaret beside her, who sat primly, all in black, full skirt with a high lace collar that buttoned delicately all the way up her throat. "Margret," Juliet said, "Tell me about this new volume of botany discoveries you received from your uncle in Oxford." So Margaret launched into the thrilling new findings she had read from Marianne North's new book, and Juliet sipped her tea and listened closely, giving small exclamations of curiosity here and there. As they discussed their ideas about the book, little curls of incense danced around them and the candles in the room burned down as the hours passed. One thing was certain, there is no better way to pass the time than to be in the company of your most cherished friend, sipping tea and discussing your shared passions on a cold snowy day.
