The Sea Hag has been out at sea the last 15 years.
She has participated in all manner of good and bad deeds, walking the wooden decks of ships, looking out across the vast horizon from the crow's nest, and taking lovers at will.
When she has grown bored of the crew, she will often simply jump off the deck and swim away. Enough of their nonsense. Time for a new adventure!
Ever since her encounter with that first mermaid, her life has changed forever. She is one with the sea now. Not a mermaid, she didn't transform into a different species, but... well, she was rather changed. Besides her hair being a tangle of seaweed and her clothes being damp all of the time, she found she could also swim all day without tiring, and hold her breath for hours on end. So she spent her time wandering the depths, getting to know the creatures of the sea, ordinary and supernatural alike.
She would come up for air and look around to see where she was (which, let's be real, was usually just in a flat blue expanse. Supernatural powers didn't come with supernatural navigation, sigh).
"Suffering no fools" can be lonely at times, but for the most part she was at peace with herself and her absolute rejection of worldly attachments. Is her seaweed hair looking feral? The wilder the better, she thinks.
Today was bright and clear, and when she popped up her head, she discovered she was right by the shore, a towering lighthouse looming above and a single figure retreating up the beach.
Bobbing directly in front of her was a glass bottle.
"Hum," she murmured, curious. People were always throwing things into the ocean. Her favorites were messages in bottles. She snatched it and swam for shore, perching on the closest rock and carelessly smashing the bottle open.
"Sue me," she said out loud and unrolled the paper.
My dearest Sea Hag,
I have missed you so deeply this spring, my heart aches in my rib cage and my thoughts wander back to you day after day. I find myself deep under water, searching for you, only to wake and discover I am surrounded by these stone walls. The air that rushes by my tower reminds me of your screeches, and I yearn to behold you once again. Time has not lessened the press of your absence.
Forever Your Love,
Ember
The Sea Hag huffed and tossed the letter aside and didn't watch as it fluttered down into the crashing waves. She had found Ember's letters before, sometimes far out at sea, other times poking out of the sand on a beach on some remote island.
"How many letters have you written?" she shouted into the breeze, and jumped back into the water. But as she swam away, something tugged at her heart, and she turned around to take stock of the coastline, the lighthouse, the rocks jutting up out of the water. Perhaps she would try to return to this place in the future to look for more letters...
